We love this charming Flemish city with the same concoction of canals, cobbled streets, towers and terrace cafés as Bruges but without the pressure of so many tourists. At the confluence of the rivers Lys and Scheldt, the city prospered in the 15th century as the heart of the Flemish cloth trade. Today it boasts over 400 historic buildings, including the magnificent moated Gravensteen and the beautiful St Bavo's Cathedral. Don't miss the view from the top of the belfry. When your feet tire of the sights, a boat excursion makes a welcome rest and a wonderful way to view the ornate guild houses and gilded spires.
